ACCESSIBLE—The ability to approach, reach, enter, or use. ACCESSIBLE ROUTE—An interior or exterior circulation path. APPROACH DIRECTION—a. A forward approach assumes reach or use may be in front of a person. b. A parallel approach assumes reach or use may be beside a person. CLEAR FLOOR SPACE—a. The zone of comfort surrounding a wheelchair everywhere it goes is a wheelchair's clear floor space. b. The width and depth of a floor surface making a particular fixture accessible is that fixture's clear floor space. CROSS SLOPE—The slope ninety degrees to the direction of travel. KNEE AND TOE SPACE—A contact-free zone. FINISHED FLOOR—The accessible floor surface a wheelchair travels on. FIXTURE—The basic fixtures found in single-family homes. RAMP—An accessible route with a running slope steeper than 1 : 20 is a ramp. ROUGH-IN DIMENSION—The distance between two structural walls before a wall covering is applied. RUNNING SLOPE—The slope in the same direction of travel. WATER CLOSET—The designation given to a toilet. (cont.) WIDTH, HEIGHT, AND DEPTH—a. Width is the horizontal distance 90 degrees to the direction of approach or use. b. Height is the vertical distance above the finished floor, if any. c. Depth is the horizontal distance in the same direction of approach or use. Throughout this guide, the width-height-depth order is used when describing dimensions.
