Although the ADA Guidelines have changed only slightly since then—the 2010 update—always adhere to local building codes.
The general rule is: city, county, and state laws may be more stringent than the ADA Accessibility Guidelines, the International Building Code, industry standards, or the guidelines contained in this book.

INTRODUCTION—The Right Space illustrates what is essential for wheelchair accessibility: the ability to enter your own home, use any fixture in any order, turn around and leave. Being able to accomplish that means a person lives in an accessible home. In the United States, people in wheelchairs can move freely through public spaces because of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Single-family homes, typically, do not have the same freedom of movement. They do have a growing number of men and women advocating design and construction practices that facilitate home accessibility regardless of age or ability. It is important to note that new construction or renovation must conform to local requirements. This guide's several hundred three-dimensional pictures illustrate basic floor spaces and fixtures within a home's first floor using notes, suggestions, and relevant ADA specifications. The illustrations begin with the clear floor space a wheelchair always occupies. Succeeding pictures follow a path from a sidewalk, to an entrance door, and into a bathroom and a kitchen. They illustrate turning spaces, doors, landings, ramps, and high and low reach. Also examined are the relationships between adjacent fixtures and the turning spaces allowing access from one fixture to another. This guide's goal is to create an aware consumer, one able to ask building or real estate professionals the right questions to ensure that every path, every space, and every fixture in his or her home has received special consideration.
